1. Gather the necessary documents to apply for a passport.

Proof of Identity - This can be an ID card (RG), a federally recognized job card, a photo driver's license, or a business card. The previous passport is also valid. In detail: If you change your name, also take your marriage certificate.

CPF - If the number is on the ID, CNH or business card, there is no need to show the original

Marriage certificate - if you change your name

Naturalization certificate for naturalization.

Old Passport - If this is not your first passport, you will need to take your previous (general or emergency) passport if it is still valid. If not submitted, a double fee will be charged.

In the case of men, it is no longer necessary to present voter registration, election or military service certificates. However, it is necessary to regularly complete the electoral and military service, as verification is carried out when the passport is issued. If verification reveals inconsistencies, it may be necessary to present a voter registration card or proof of voting or military service. Check your status on the TSE and Army website.

Children under 5 years of age must be present at the appointment and must submit a recent 5 x 7 face photograph, color and undated background, and white background. For those over 5 years old, the photo was taken while they were serving in the Federal Police, which we will discuss below.

For more information about documents, visit the website of the Federal Police where you can create a list of all the documents required for a passport.

2. Complete the passport application form.

The next step in the process of obtaining a passport is to fill out the electronic application form on the Federal Police website, which is fairly simple and quick to fill out. There are four screens where you can enter your personal data, find out more in our step-by-step guide below.

Remember that you cannot use the "Back" button in the browser as you will lose all data. Only use your own form buttons located at the bottom of the page.

Below is the first screen, which must be filled in with all your personal data such as your full name, affiliation, date of birth, race or skin colour, marital status, citizenship with country, city and state where you were born, and previous name if you ever change your name.

One of the biggest questions here is how to fill in the first and last name, and by default all first names are included in the first field and last names in the second field. Correct partitioning speeds up the service, but if you fill in the wrong data, don't worry: tell them before serving in the PF post and they will go to the correct form.

Documents at hand! On this second screen you enter the details of your identity document, which is nothing but your identity. Then enter the CPF number and the person in charge of the passport is under 18 years old. Details of your birth certificate are also required.

If you are renewing your passport or the document has been stolen / stolen / lost or abandoned / confiscated by the Pension Fund, then on this screen you enter the information from the previous passport.

On the third screen, the applicant must enter additional data for registration, such as profession, email address and all your address details.

The fourth and final screen is for you to carefully check all the data entered in the passport application. If everything is in order, just select the option that appears at the bottom of the page and click Submit. If you need to modify any data, just click Back and make the changes.

After filling and confirming the data, a protocol will be generated with your application and a payment receipt from the Group Directory of Union (GRU).

3. Pay the passport issuance fee.

After completing the application form, click to create the Group Directory of Union (GRU) form. The commission is currently 257.25 Brazilian riyals. The payment receipt can be paid through the bank, lottery or online. Only after payment will you be able to schedule the service on the Federal Police website. The system usually provides access the next day after payment, when the bank clearing takes place.

4. Work schedule in the Federal Police

Did you pay the commission? It's time to register for a Federal Police passport. Wait for the payment to clear, which usually takes 24-72 business hours, and then log back into the PF website, this time using the service schedule link. If you require more than one person, you can schedule all of them at once.

Take a passport

After entering the CPF, protocol number and date of birth, the system will indicate the available cities and stations, as well as the days and times of the free schedule in each of them. For security reasons, you can only transfer twice every 30 days.

There are many posts available for maintenance, but sometimes it is difficult to schedule and some sites are more popular than others. For example, consider service at a shopping center service station, which is usually quieter than at an airport service station.

Tip: If you see an error message when making an appointment on the website of the Federal Police, check that the CPF number and date of birth indicated in the protocol are correct. If you have any errors, make an appointment as usual and ask to be corrected in the PF mail.

5. Visit the Federal Police Station.

On the specified date, go to the PF mail with all the original documents specified in paragraph 1. Submitting a payment confirmation is optional, but may be necessary in cases of discrepancy or error in completing the CPF. The Federal Police recommends getting in the mail 15 minutes early.

If you are renewing your passport, remember that you must have your previous passport along with the other necessary documents listed in point 1 of our list.

Important: it is not necessary to take pictures, as this will be done by the Federal Police while on duty. An exception is children under 3 years old who need a 5×7 face photograph, recent, in color and with a white background.

6. Take out your passport.

Is your passport ready? Then go to the post office, with the original identification document, and photograph! Delivery is carried out only to the owner - in the case of minors, they must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians. The passport will be canceled if it is not withdrawn within 90 days. The passport is valid for ten years, if your passport is about to expire, you can get a new one before it expires by following the above steps.

The Federal Police maintains a FAQ page on its website that contains information about passports for minors, foreigners, and other issues. If you have any questions, you can contact the PF via email at faleconosco@dpf.gov.br.
