How to get a passport for children under 18
It is very easy and inexpensive to get a passport for children under 18 years old. The document is issued by the Federal Police, and you will need to go to one of its publications twice: once to take your child's fingerprints, and the other, finally, to pick up your final passport. See step by step:
1. Gather the required documents.
To obtain a passport, children under 18 years old need to collect several documents:
Birth certificate of a child / under 18 years old;
identity document and ATP of the responsible person;
Marriage certificate (in case of change of parents' name);
permission to issue a passport to the child;
A photograph, 5 x 7, in colour, with no date, on a white background (up to five years old)
2. Fill out an application on the website of the Federal Police.
The form is very simple and quick to fill out, and the site is the same for both adults and minors.
There are four screens in total where you will need to enter personal information such as documents, address and other details. When filling out, you must follow the form: all names must be indicated in the first field, and surnames in the second. The section speeds up the application process, but if you fill it out incorrectly, there is no problem, since everything will be arranged for you in the PF.
After filling and confirming the data, a protocol will be generated with your application and a payment receipt from the Group Directory of Union (GRU).
3. Pay the fees for issuing a passport under the age of 18.
Despite the short period of validity, the passport for people under the age of 18 has the same number of pages as an adult passport, and the entire production and transportation process is also identical. Therefore, the amount is the same as for an adult.
When you are done filling out the application form, click to create a Standard Payment Proof (GRU) form. The commission is currently 257.25 Brazilian riyals.
The payment receipt can be paid through the bank, lottery or online. Only after payment will you be able to schedule the service on the Federal Police website. The system usually provides access the next day after payment, when the bank clearing takes place.
4. Schedule a personal service appointment.
After making the payment, it is necessary to wait for the payment to be received, which may take 24-72 working hours, so keep an eye on the PF website as the payment will be updated.
Once paid, you can finally schedule Personal Assistance to Minors on the PF website, this time using the appointment link. You will be able to access with CPF, protocol number and date of birth, after which the system will indicate the available cities and stations, as well as the free days and times in each of them. For security reasons, you can only transfer twice every 30 days.
If you require more than one person, you can schedule all of them at once.
5. Take your child or teen to a federal police station.
On the appointed day, hand the minor over to the PF post with all the original documents specified in paragraph 1. Submitting a payment confirmation is optional, but it may be necessary if there is a discrepancy or an error when filling out the CPF, there is nothing to take.
The Federal Police recommends arriving at the post office 15 minutes early.
The service is usually very fast. After the initial scan, the child or teen will be asked to enter a password to verify the data. Then, using the same password, the fingerprints of minors will be taken.
If the applicant is less than 5 years old, a recent 5 x 7 photo must be submitted with the required documents. However, a minor must be present. The use of the captured image prevents accidents and inconveniences during childcare, as well as delays in childcare.
In the case of all other applicants over 5 years old, it is not necessary to take them, because on the day of service, a photo of the face will be taken. A parent or guardian will be able to accompany you at any time.
The photo is accepted with closed eyes in exceptional cases if the applicant is a newborn In other cases, the image will be rejected.
Once you're done, just wait to get ready. The deadline is usually six working days and you will be provided with a protocol with a possible delivery date - you can check the status of your order on this page.
6. Removal of the minor's passport.
Is your passport ready? Again, go with the child or teen to the PF site with the original identification document to be collected! Delivery is only made to the parents or legal guardians of a minor.
Attention: The passport will be canceled if it is not received within 90 days.
Frequently Asked Questions About Issuing Passports to Those Under 18
What is the validity period of a child's passport?
For safety reasons and due to the rapid change in the appearance of children, their passports have a shorter period of validity, depending on the age of the minor at the time of personal assistance.
Validity of the child's passport
0 to 1 year incomplete 1 year
From a full year to two incomplete years Two years
2 to 3 years incomplete 3 years
3 full years to 4 incomplete years 4 years
4 full years up to 18 incomplete years 5 years
Why should children under the age of five submit a printed photo?
A child under 5 years of age must attend the service like any applicant, but a recent 5x7 face photograph, color and undated background, and white background must also be submitted.
Photography prevents accidents or discomfort for the child during the service. In addition, it avoids delays in family visits and subsequent applicants.
In what cases can you refuse to print a photo?
According to international civil aviation standards, even a child's face in a photo cannot be partially hidden by features or adornments. In addition, the photo in which the child is no longer recognized - due to the time elapsed since his capture - will also be rejected.
What is a travel permit for people under 18 and how does it work?
A travel permit is a permit required to board a minor who is traveling without his parents. At the discretion of the parent or guardian, permission to issue a passport may permit the inclusion of a travel authorization printed on the passport booklet itself.
Two types of permits can be included in the passport:
1. A minor is allowed to travel with only one of the parents, without discriminating with either of them.
2. A minor is allowed to travel, even alone or with one of the parents only, without any discrimination with either of them.
3. If the type of travel permit is not stated, it is understood that the inclusion was not authorized by the parent or guardian and the passport will be issued without a printed travel permit. In these cases, the minor usually travels with a passport provided that he is accompanied by both parents. If one is absent, you must submit a travel permit in a separate section for the absent parent.
If you have any other questions about travel authorization, please visit the National Council of Justice page.
How does the passport work for children under 18?
The authorization to issue a passport can be done in a simple way, based on a court authorization, a government power of attorney or a special power of attorney. It will be valid for one year from the date of issue or signature, and the type of document accepted depends on who will accompany the minor during the personal approval of the application.
If the parents are present on the day the minor’s passport application is submitted, the authorization can be made using a simple form that must be completed at home and signed in the presence of an accompanying person. There are three forms depending on the type of travel permit that parents wish to include in their passport:
Simple Form Type 1: Allows the issuance of a passport with the inclusion of a travel permit so that a minor can travel with only one parent, regardless of his identity.
Simple Form Type 2: Allows the issuance of a passport with a travel permit included so that a minor can travel alone or with only one parent.
Simple Form Type 3: It is allowed to issue a passport without a travel permit.
If a parent does not attend, the parent present must provide one of the following types of authorization to issue a passport:
A simple form of one of the above types, signed by the absent parent, recognized in the Brazilian registry.
A special power of attorney from the absent parent signed by a Brazilian notary, consulate or apostille that allows the current parent to request a passport for minors
A power of attorney from the absent parent, issued by a Brazilian notary office or a Brazilian consulate, authorizing the current parent to request a minor's passport.
A court statement issued by the relevant district if the absent parent is absent or there is a refusal to allow the current parent to request the minor's passport
Birth certificate confirming that the minor is registered as a child of only one of the parents, if applicable
Death certificate in case of death of the absent parent
The term of guardianship, provided that it includes an express indication of the termination or suspension of the family powers of the absent parent.
Note: An incarcerated father or mother can authorize the issuance of their child's passport in the usual way if their signature on a normal form is notarized or they have issued a power of attorney as described above.
If neither parent is present, you must provide permission to issue one of the following types of passports:
A power of attorney for parents issued by a Brazilian notary office or a Brazilian consulate, allowing their companion to request a minor's passport.
A judicial permission issued by a competent area allows the escort to request a minor’s passport.
The term of guardianship, provided that it includes an express reference to the separation or suspension of the parents’ family authority.
A simple form of one of the possible types with the signatures of the parents recognized in the registry office, if the minor is from 16 to 18 years old (in these cases, the minor can apply on his own, if there is an accompanying person). Refusal)
